Trash Tuesday #58: Where Getting it Cheap is Part of the Esthetic

Rocks and bottles: more specifically, river rocks and blue bottles.

I like the concept of asking the universe for what you want. But I usually just ask friends; they tend to be more reliable. To this end, I went forward with my heart’s desire to build a cord wood structure at the bottom of my hillside(think Grandma Prisby). Although I put out the call for blue bottles, the universe came up short. Compromised, I used the collected bottles in a wall I built with local river rock.

River rock collected from the lot above. The former site of The Virginian restaurant. I may never have dined in Virginia, but I do remember arriving at the nearby stables minutes after the owner’s sister jumped off the York Blvd Bridge. A memory that’s followed me symbolically in my paintings and now into my wall. I blame the event on menopause; an unkind condition that afflicts women.

.
Remember reading Highlights Magazine as a child? My favorite challenge was identifying the hidden objects in a Highlight illustration. Your assignment here in the “adjacents” is to name the past Trash Tuesday items appearing in my wee video production. The winner will receive a fabulous prize (if they get their ass over to that other blog)

dbdubya: thanks for the memories/recall

In my neighborhood, trash collection takes place on a Tuesday. The night before is a good time to canvas the neighborhood for castaways. It’s great sport. I use Tuesday on my blog to post my treasures. The phrase “getting it cheap is part of the esthetic’ was coined by my photographer friend D Gordon

Tressa Prisby: the creator of Bottle Village and Pasadena Adjacent’s spiritual sister created her masterpiece with material collected from the junk yard. Watch this excellent filmed interview of Grandma Prisby.

  2. Pasadena Adjacent is not the author of the superb masonry work appearing in the first photo. This work can be found at a house behind the Altadena Public Library located on Mariposa Ave.

Pasadena Adjacent’s masonry work borders on deplorable functionality

The marbles in the wall once belonged to Pasadena Adjacent’s father when he was a child.

  3. The garden is so pretty and green. But now I must lay down because I’m dizzy from the video.

  4. The hidden objects was my favorite part of highlights magazines too. They were often already circled as I read them waiting for my orthodontist to see me. I can’t find anything in your video because it gave me motion sickness!

  5. I think your wall is a treasure. And I love the staggered, sculptural look of your (solar?) lights.

  6. Ok, I’m confused. The second wall of china is yours, right? I think it’s beautiful. Yes, we are all children of the Highlights. I admired Goofus.

  7. Your garden looks delightful. I wish we had better soil – and a terrace. We had a harsh winter and now what little is in my garden looked like melted candles for a time, although, there are a few trees starting to green up. You’re a whirlwind of creativity PA and I love your wall.

  8. No. I don’t remember reading Highlights magazine as a child.
I don’t even recall seeing any magazine by that name.
Did it really exist? Or was it just legend?

If it’s real, and you have good copies, you may bee a rich woman, PA. :P

  9. I haven’t been following your blog long enough to come up with an answer but now that you put me on your e-mail list I’ll be ready next time.
I don’t think I’ve ever been over during daylight hours. Thanks for the tour. Yours is a great house for summer parties.

Now whats that little bit about the woman and the bridge? Curious

  10. I can vagely recall The Virginian…now I’m on a hunt to find more about it. I’ll have to pull up the LA Times archives on the woman.
I was going to ask how you got the perfect cement around the rocks – it’s amazing craftsmanship, but I like your wall much better.
Will go on a hunt for objects from home. CP, a post elementary-school immigrant like myself has seen copies of the Highlights mag…I’ll have to get a couple of vintage copies for your office for the clients to browse thru.
