Cul-de-sacs are King and Homes are Painted Cream
by Pasadena Adjacent
Who can forget the medical breakdown documented in “That Cats Killing Me”? The medication prescribed turned out to be about as effective as that Dutch boy’s thumb in the dike. Backed against the wall, I was now ready to cross the border and seek out a specialist. One willing to empty my pockets at the unusual and somewhat creepy time slot of 8:00 am on a Sunday morning.
Arriving early, we waited alone in a empty parking lot of an anonymous industrial park (“Roe verses Wade” kept crossing my mind). Add more anonymous white boxes housing other animal specialist to the scene in a land I affectionately refer to as “where the fuck are we?” Irvine adjacent look alike Tustin.
“Bad mommy” has left her charge behind in a cubicle where “said charge” is spending the week being radiated until she sends the geiger counter well beyond the toxicity level of orange Bauer ware. Upon her release she will be classified as hazmat and returned with special handling directions. Visit Tova’s tumor here

Mind you, I’m suspicious of Orange County (and the vets who drive sporty Beemers and charge an extra 75 bucks for the kitty cam password). Just as German order and efficiency can be said to produce a Hitler, so Orange County through the arts produced “The Happiest Place on Earth”. An attitude that has easily translated into an urban planning model that would go on to replace sections of Irvine Ranch with a crimeless plethora of planned communities awash in a tasteful but limited palate. All roads lead to a cul-de-sac (French for bottom of the bucket).

…..But a trip behind the orange curtain need not be experienced as a quicky u-turn. No, armed with a Thomas map, McKinney’s trail guide and a full tank, there are things to do here. Again, allow me to be your guide.
For starters, how about the “Mac Daddy” of post and beam construction?
After we escaped the road closed, cul-de-sac and big box retailers scene, we concluded the day at Newport Beach. A day that wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Newport’s Lovell/Schindler beach house.
There is plenty more betwix these many concrete wonders of the great OC, but why use all my material on a single post. Our saga continues into the next post; and who doesn’t wish to witness Tova’s return?

Special thanks to Madam Gramophone who provided the Bowie audio link
I can tell this is Mr. V’s kind of town.
How exciting that PA is venturing forth to show us the hidden delights of the OC. This will take our mind off Tovah until she’s back in the adjacent where she belongs.
Nothing can make me look at the tumor, though.
Ditto de above commentators.
I like your post title. An entertaining post. Thanks for the insider info on de OC, PA!
That cracked me up when Mr. V muttered, “Aren’t there any middle class people in this town?”
After the doctor-ordered two weeks in Newport, I was happy to come back to my slightly scruffy dogs and town. I think Newport and Corona Del Mar have a law that you must pay at least $5,000 for your watch in order to live there. And diamonds must be at least two carats or you get tossed out on your ear.
I will have to return to visit the Lovell/Schindler beach house.
Hope Tovah is making a nice recovery.
My thoughts are with Tova, let’s hope that nasty lump is zapped completely away. Love your description of the OC, no doubt inhabited by rich vets treating our pets. Did you catch the story that made the news yesterday about the couple threatened with imprisonment for converting their lawn into a waterwise garden of succulents and natives?
PS If you find yourself behind the Orange Curtain again, you’ve got to go to Zinc’s for breakfast. They have locations in Corona Del Mar and Laguna.
Hope your kitty is recovering…both feline and financial. Video good; a fantastic forest of perfect palms, is forest the right word? And conveniently growing in a mannor that still allows people to park. Wondrous. Very amusing mutterings and commentary on the missing middle class cafe from Mr. V, then speeding away. Another clever title too. We have a similar dilemma finding non-chain breakfast joints.
You are funny. Here’s hoping kitty fares well in the OC.
WOW! Didn’t know Tova had a tumor. Glad it’s benign but can’t figure why they had to radiate it. Just talked to a Professor last week who had a similar cat situation. They had to do special things with the kitty litter and he used the geiger counter on his cat to make sure it was safe for the kids to play with. Hope she is happily back home.
Oh, Tovah!!! Sending lots of healing wishes. (I’m with the Hiker about looking at the tumor.)
i haven’t even watched the video and am already totally sympathetic! I got SO lost in Irvine once that I ended up making a left hand turn from the far right hand lane of an 8 lane road! i was that desperate.
I noticed on the ad section of FB Irvine’s been pushing a new housing development called Woodbury Village. Combine a vaguely sounding english title, some stucco and water and you’ve got yourself a village. They’re taking applications.
Tova does appear to be encapsulated.
………….
Tova’s tumor is benign
AH: Believe it or not, it was Mr V’s teaching gig at University of Irvine that was his favorite. Add the fact that half the french post modernist philosophers landed here and your swimming in irony.
The inclusion of Tova’s tumor was tastefully done. You must trust me on this.
CO Dog: glad to be of assistence. Now you know where to go to see a specialist….
Brain
Eyes
Cancer and other
hit by a car
then after you’ve paid your bill, you can look forward to returning home on the bus
Susan: The problem with the hi-end life, is that the older you get, the bigger your jewelry and the worse it looks on you. Flash belongs to the young and smooth (but try telling that to the housewives of the OC).
we eventually found the working class but they weren’t in a cul-de-sac
Bellis: Was that an Orange County story? I think something similar happened in Glendale
Being a bit of a history buff I hope you read the “Happiest Place on Earth” story. The only place that guarantees that free speech or parody will not be tolerated…. sung to the tune of “it’s a small world after all.” (I hear the joint even has a holding cell under the castle).
D: interesting you should mention “Palm Forrest” Those particular date palms on the video have all been dragged from their homes in the desert to be landscape fodder. You really have to go to the edge of the growing desert hamlets to see a proper date farm these days.
Petrea: Thanks. Every day the office sends me a photo; including one with a cartoon bubble over Tova’s head telling me how “cozy” she finds her fluorescent lit space capsule.
Really, I’m not sure she’s moved her entire stay. Poor dear.
Bec: She has hyper thyroidism and the pills were not stopping the tumor’s growth. She has to have twice the load because of the size; doubling her stay. The radioactive iodine treatment specifically targets the tumor and breaks it up so the body will absorb it.
Where does one buy a gieger counter?
Laurie: But Laurie…her eyes and tumor look like little orange glowballs….the condition makes her very hyper and unable to sleep through the night. Gave me a glimpse of motherhood. Had I had children, I would have spiked their bottle before bedtime.
Gail: I’m convinced it’s the layout of this city that keeps crime low (I believe it’s got one of the lowest rates in the country). Now someone not familiar with this hood could be successful on a hi speed chase. If your a victim of crime it’s probably the neighbor whose guilty.
John E: ahh Shakespeare Circle, Chaucer Alley, Kensington Woods…no thanks. I refer to the area as IKEA nation. I blame the Danes.
Benign! Hooray!
Yeah, the sleep deprivation thing is definitely part of parenthood’s definition. And our kid didn’t sleep through the night til she was three. My eyes looked like orange glowballs back then. That’s why I get by on so little sleep now… I was trained by a sadistic master!
I’ll brave looking at the tumor. Uh…. later.
So glad the kitteh is gonna be okay.
Oh, and how cool you and Shanna connected! Her place is really great, isn’t it?
Why do I trust you, and why did you make me look at that?
(I’ll see if I can grow some catnip for Tovah this summer.)
Hang in there Tovah, my thoughts are with you, buddy! What’s worse, the treatment or the isolation in a strange place? I’ve heard cats don’t handle change well.
that kitty is so silence …. by the way, that is a leaf :)
Laurie: That sweet little love buddy of mine has turned into a four legged monster. Demanding!! Did I mention the appetite of a Great Dane? That first night without her I slept eleven hours. Maybe thats what mothers need, a sleep break.
AH: Yes, really, why do you?
Tovah could continue to exhibit monster behavior for another six months. Although the tumor is broken, it’s not gone and will continue to inhibit the production of thyroid “stuff” for up to six months.
I put out a carpet sample with “nip” on it for Tova’s amusement. Peoples came over and peed on it. grrr
Keith: That’s what I keep repeating as our mantra. Everyday I get a picture of my wee Neil Armstrong in her space capsule. This latest one did me in…..come get me NOW!! and I’ll be there tomorrow 10 am

Deepak: She is silent, and I suspect miserable and lonely. Poor thing
no worries, we won’t go to those areas as we consider them to be blighted.
L
I’m really relieved that the tumor was benign, and hope the thyroid will settle down soon. Is she (he?) happy to be home?
The story about the lawn was, indeed, in the OC. Mind you, their front yard looked really awful until they got enough plants from their kind neighbors to cover the bare areas.
Where/what is the MacDaddy of post and beam? What a weird building.
Chris and Lisa: yes, blighted. What I was thinking
Bellis: She’s still in that space capsule. Although responding well to the treatment, she had to double her stay.
The rather large Post and Beam structure is across the street from an outdoor mall in a large field owned by the El Toro Marine base (I think) The road was Tustin Ranch road and Mr V believes these structures (two of them) housed blimps during WWII
