Intermission
by Pasadena Adjacent
While we’re between showers I’d like to take a break from the rain and “Concrete Wonders” to introduce you to my new boyfriend. Having walked the “Green Mile” with four cats in less then three years, it was time for a replacement. But what about “Peoples you ask? The way I see it, Peoples is just domesticated enough to be a financial burden and feral enough to be bad company.
Having said that, allow me to explain my acceptance and deliverance process. When I bring a cat into a shelter, I go to the Pasadena Humane Society. When I want to take a cat out of a shelter, I go to the San Gabriel Humane Society. Introducing our replacement… we’ve named him True. Whoever had him last shoved him through the mail slot of the SG shelter. I selected him from the crowd and Ramona approved the choice. He’ll live with her until “her” is no longer, and then he’ll join my tribe.
If you’ve not been to the San Gabriel Animal Shelter lately…let me just say this place has improved greatly . The cats are kept in warm rooms divided by sex, age and socialization. They get a ton of volunteer help from adults, high school kids and the folks over at Foothill Veterinary Clinic. For a mere 99 bucks we came home with a cat that was micro chipped, FeLV tested, vaccinated and altered.
We simply adore our ginger boy

More of our ginger boy
PA, If I don’t recognize you by your umbrella, I will recognize you by your scratches. :)
True is truly lucky and will reward you many times over. It’s such a lovely story! My Teddy came from the Pasadena folks, a starving elderly stray with bad teeth, whom I rescued on his final day. After extensive (and expensive) tooth surgery he’s a happy, plump kitty and we love him. I agree about the SG shelter – it’s much nicer than it used to be.
Love him and the juxtaposition of cat and umbrella….
I love that you bring abandoned cats to the Four Seasons of shelters and yet adopt from the Holiday Inn. (From when I last saw the San Gabriel Shelter, it was a Motel Six, but I’ve given it an upgrade based on your description.)
He IS TRUE-ly adorable – look at that face! I bet Ramona is so happy (except at 4 am when he must wake her up).
…nice lead in with the umbrella over ? shot.
Ouch , I hope your jeans are thick.
Enjoy the new one in your life.
He’s a hot rod, fully equipped and good-lookin’.
You come up with the best cat names. So glad to hear that about SG shelter. Now that you mention it, I think it was taken over my new and more compassionate mangement several years ago.
On behalf of Queen V (who also walked the Green Mile in 2009)
the replacements……
Trixie and Truman
Ragdolls who will grow up to be between 15 and 20 pounds
i love trixie and truman tumbling down those steps, great video!
How did making that video not hurt? The “more of” photo is my favorite. A perfectly contented cat.
True is a lovely, lovely boy and this is a great audio-visual beginning to his story. Love the fly swatter at the end. We declaw, do you?
I’ve read that Ragdolls are the friendliest, sweetest of kitties. Would love to have one but no more longhairs for me after the two we have now. I kid you not, cleaning up after them is a part time job.
The SGV Humane Society shelter has never had great facilities. But, they’ve managed to make up for it with love & care for their animal visitors.
Pretty kitty. QV’s new kitties pretty too. All you felinophiles are missing the boat without a dog greeting you once you get home. No ecstatic dog-dance every time you come through the door (even if you’ve only been gone 10 minutes), no licking and slobering as they jump all over you with reckless abandon, overjoyed at seeing you again. No new sweater with a big snag from an overwrought dog’s paw. Just ask Cafe Observer; it’s a dog’s life, get with it!!
You see the light, D!
I am the volunteer cat-catcher for the city of Pasadena.
………….
Back when I was a kid, the San Gabriel Animal Shelter had a feature they called “Story Book Farm”. It was located in the far back where they kept farm animals. A treat for us suburban kids. A decade or more ago (95ish) when I visited the San Gabriel Animal Shelter during our post riot economic slump, things had gone downhill. The cat room was a freezing uncarpeted concrete bunker. I actually went into the office and requested they euthanize one of the cats who was so obviously ill, I feared for the health of the animals she shared space with. Besides a change in the above situation (including the volunteer services of a building contractor), this shelter now tests for FeLV which for me is a “deal maker” and something Pasadena has always done. BTW: kitten give false positives when it comes to testing… young adults (4 months) test reliably.
Bellis: You and commenter Mary are the saints of animal rescue. I bow to you both. You not only pull animals off the green mile, you take on their medical bills. BTW; I took your very informative quote about chaparral off of Laurie’s Glimpses blog and put it in my carbon river post. Last Sunday I was hanging out with a county fire fighter and he confirmed the excessive heat and forest services budget/bad call.
Linda: When I showed Mr V the photo he said he didn’t think anyone would recognize the umbrella or the intended association. I told him not a woman alive doesn’t recognize an animal print.
Susan: It’s true and I will lie their way in. I took one cat that had been living in near total darkness for three months or more at the studio we took over (he belonged to a crack addict who abandoned him; he was a good ratter). They found him a home; and someone got a great big sweet cat with droopy eyes.
Tash: I was hesitant to bring in another cat considering mom’s age. I also knew that somehow, someway through someone, a cat was going to land on her doorstep. Might as well be that “someone”
Dina: thick enough and I enjoy every minute I spend with him. I plan to visit True this afternoon. Luvv him.
Petrea: He’s smoochy cute and a complete charmer.
Altadena Hiker: Thanks about the names….we try
I want to get the word out about the San Gabriel Shelter. After stopping at SG we headed over to Pasadena. Pasadena had less then ten cats (good for them). SG had many many cats that are in competition for homes as well. Pasadena has the space, money and is well endowed (and why I take cats there)…. SG is doing the best with what it’s got.
Mary: Another of the saints of animal rescue. Three cats and four dogs (now that Yodas gone). You have the rare distinction of having met T and T.
Keith: A high tolerance to pain when it’s delivered by such a charmer. Unfortunately I haven’t one photo of True where he’s both awake and not a complete blur. I shall continue my quest.
Paula: He is the sweetest boy although it appears that I will need to nip this clawing thing. But art comes first, discipline later. You should try those cardboard scratch boxes they sell now (and some wood near the door they enter and exit from).
We’ll see about the “dolls” they are beautiful and I look forward to their gargantuan proportions.
CO: It’s defiantly a dog’s life in Pasadena. I’d argue that Pasadena’s cat facilities are not so good. On the plus side they’re in the process of transitioning from a small cat room packed with cages (located somewhere near Canada) to a large room where the cats can be brought out to stretch and socialize.
D: You forgot to include all the doggy smudges on the sliding glass door and car windows. Right…and what a pleasure to carry a 99 cent bag with the days deposit? Someone needs to make a doggie harness with fashionable compartments for that sort of thing; (maybe something in a leopard print).
Spay and Neuter Spay and Neuter Spay and Neuter Spay and Neuter Spay and Neuter Spay and Neuter Spay and Neuter Spay and Neuter Spay and Neuter Spay and Neuter Spay and Neuter Spay and Neuter
I perfer to think of those car window smudges as a form of window tinting.
Speaking of pups — oh, we weren’t at this time — in any case, I stumbled (not down the stairs…that is so cute & I love the wood on the stairs!) onto this LA architects web site & this specific one. http://www.you-are-here.com/restaurant/tail_pup.html (:D
I’m glad to know about the SG shelter We got our Beau from the Pasadena one. He was so sick and tiny and thin that the counselor was reluctant to let me have him. He is now big and healthy. It was love at first sight.
Congrats on your new True love!
Cute kity. We have 8 puppies; 5 white (1male 4 female) 2 black (male) 1 brown (male). Emma’s baby Navada’s lidder. 2 weeks old now. They are starting to open their eyes. We will be giving them away near the end of Febuary. If you know anyone who wants one. middium size Lab mix. Navada’s mother was a tricolor lab..her mother a black lab and her father a chocolate lab. birthday Jan 13th 2010. love ya.
………….
Betty: the LA River Cats thank you for your vouchers
D: maybe if you fed the pups beets
Tash: a classic, thanks
Shanna: I’m getting prepared for another delivery. A tabby has shown up at the studio. Sweet as pie and if Malcom can’t find her a home, I’ll be taking her up to Pasadena.
Rozi: Betty is going to hurt you
My girl scouts have done several projects for SG animal shelter and last year we got a tour. I thought the people were very sweet and committed to their animals. The facilities, while not grand, were clean and decent. My dog went from the SG animal shelter to the Glendale Humane Society before we got her.
And I did hear my secret boyfriend!
It is always pleasant to capture cats.
Love the kitties.
Love the umbrella. (Of course we knew it was you!)
