For those with a love of the obscure and arcane, a early 1956 Desert Magazine article about Frank Antone Martin. Touching
Well, I’m very flattered, PA!
Even more so re your old baseball knowledge.
I like the chapel, the rocks and its overall simplicity are very appealing to me. It also reminds me a lot of the serenity chapel at Elvis’s birth place in Tupelo, MS. I’m sure you know that Julie over at Scottsdale Daily has covered Taliesin extensively.
Best wishes for Queen V in this new year.
I find it chilling. Like, if you met the guy that assembled one of these, how you’d be trapped in a corner by him as he rambled on and on. And I would just nod and nod, looking for some way to escape.
is not it interesting ? I think yes. Hope, 2010 will bring more happiness for you.
This is all quite amazing, although I’m glad we don’t have them here in Israel.
But crosses on the garbage shed?? Oi
You’re quite the poet. Wee Taliesin looks like a wee fast food joint. The removable roof panels sounds like a cool idea that must not have worked out too well over the years (much like some of FLW’s own ideas). What’s the jealous turtle doing in the mix?
I create sacred space, that’s what I do, so when I see a tiny chapel, stripped down with no icons, that’s like a nice blank canvas for me to work on. I see endless possibilities in there. Maybe it’s different in person but from here it looks really interesting.
Are you familiar with Rural Studio and Samuel Mockbee?
http://www.cadc.auburn.edu/soa/rural-studio/Default.aspx
I thought of him because he and his students have created fascinating architecture, including chapels, from recycled items including old tires. They’re simply divine. If I could I would live in one of his homes.
Translation bark: I look 4ward to your next post.
That little chapel freaks me out. Then again, most chapels freak me out.
Wishing Queen V a healthy 2010. And PA, more more more of these walkabouts with you and your camera. I love the worlds you reveal.
hey – nice – A LOT of interesting content in this one! Sorry to be late, but can’t watch videos from the-place-I-spend-my-daytime-hours & haven’t been getting on at home.
I did not really pay attention to the size of the turtle – it’s HUGE.
I also love the chapel…not freaking me out at all. (Any shots of the inside on the videos? – well, I will see them soon.)
Great news about Queen V – from my OA I know that’s pretty harsh stuff to go thru! Ditto on wishing her a most healthy 2010+10+10+10+10…
Termendous sunrise photo – you are so right about the pink & blues. I took some shots toward your direction too.
I see what you mean about the sunrise looking like my sunsets! Thanks for directing me to it.
Saw the wee-deo. Very nice. I liked the cross in the wall – makes an impact as one walks in.
Thanks for the artist for the LBMoA metal fountain. I’ll update. Stupid me – I didn’t even think to research it.
PA, I bow to your superior ability for ferreting out the kitsch. Velly nice. Gentle hugs and kisses to Queen V.
I love church architecture (not big box church, but thoughtfully-considered church and/or ancient church and/or teeny weeny sunlit rock church). The light in the chapel surprises and delights me. The experiences I have in these buildings I wouldn’t call religious, but I could call sacred.

Art Clokey, creator of Gumby and Pony Pal Clokey too, has died. In 1980 the Gumby and Poky film festival was held at the Rialto Theater in South Pasadena. Classic claymation episodes on the big screen! Clokey’s bread and butter job was inspired by his 1953 experimental film Gumbasia.

Enjoy Gumbasia
Great post! I love your format with a video, links and the inclusion of the scrapbook style photo corners. They make me think of quotation marks.
Yes, I saw today that Gumby’s dad is dead. I was never much of a fan, but like the video you found.
Gumby is kinda kitschy and that’s alright. I know him mostly from Eddie Murphy’s sensitive portrayal on SNL.
It’s interesting to me that I can feel sad about the passing of a cultural icon without being that big of a fan. When John Lennon died. I sat down and joined in the minute of silence, I felt it that deeply about him even though I wasn’t that wild about his music. But I did like what he stood for and what he brought to my life over the years. I wonder if he has a chapel à la Elvis.
U R so sweet to me – re comment on ‘hands’
Just wanted you to see this link…it’s what you’ve been doing for years…

I just put up a post dealing with RED skies because of all the mentions that I’ve received and photos that I have seen with red in the sky.
Come over to my blog for a look.
I’m so far behind in responding to your comments – Thx so much for the nice words on the LA Artists mural post. Made my day.
Yup, you are right about surf-turf wars – they were really bad for a while – P. used to surf there from when he was in middle school but hasn’t done any in 20 years now & couldn’t believe the wars were real, but Annie’s husband went to Bluff cove about 10 yrs back now & was severely threatened till someone recognized him as Erik’s brother who usually surfed there…
