Trash Tuesday: Where Getting it Cheap is Part of the Esthetic #52

Revelation; I despise those ubiquitous $6.98 plastic outdoor chairs. I believe if every last one of them were to be melted down we could cover our planet with a thin skin of white plastic. The idea frightens me. Perhaps this is why my favorite curbside find is lawn furniture. I break for it.

The problem is that it’s costing me. I’m currently waiting to get back four chairs and a table from B D & G Sandblasting East 54th street (take notes). Fifty bucks for the table and fifteen apiece for the chairs. The worst part of it is that I’ve hit a wall in terms of selecting a color scheme. This is where Martha Stewart and I part company. Of course the service makes a nifty tax write off; and this is where Martha and I reemerge.

  1. In my neighborhood, trash collection takes place on a Tuesday. The night before is a good time to canvas the neighborhood for castaways. It’s great sport. I use Tuesday on my blog to post my treasures. The phrase “getting it cheap is part of the esthetic’ was coined by my photographer friend D Gordon

  2. $15/chair is a fantastic price. I wish I had known about this before I gave away four metal chairs (that came with the house) to my handy man.

I still have a beautiful vintage metal table (a PCC Flea Market find) that needs blasting and painting.

Love the sage and putty colors.

  3. Make mine Jade Green and Peach. Not to brag, but that tat of the plastic lawn chair is nothing, I have a complete set of four chairs along with the table and umbrella tattoed on my chest.

  4. I meant tatooed.

  5. If I know my paint chips, these are approximal. Add to that I am completely flumoxed by paint color choices so I’m of no help to you here. Cool tax write-off though.

  6. So THAT’S how you do it.
$50 and $15? Maybe I should go into sandblasting.

  7. I have no color sense. No color cents either, for that matter.

  8. These two images are the color palate I’m thinking of drawing from

    Costa Rica Mocha

    and this one

    Enchantment Sand

Susan: Took notes I see . I brought them in yesterday and got them back today. If you select a time, you can hang around while they do it. Curious neighborhood to explore

D: I’d pay to see that. Designing a tattoo was an actual class assignment I had in Illustrator. That would have been excellent

PJ: Aren’t paint stores torture? I could kick myself for not picking up these ticked lounge cushions on sale at Target. See, thats another thing I have to work into the scheme.

Dina: Buy yourself some good ear plugs.

AH: People think since I’m an artist that I should be the “go to” person for all things esthetic. This is a mistake. I don’t know how to pick a frame and matt. Same goes for interior design, fashion, hair and make-up.

  9. I did a comparative analysis, created separate minimized windows and viewed them against the paint colors and I declare Susan C the winner. She is eerily prescient, IMHO. I like the jade green and peach more but for a future painted furniture project, maybe distressed even. I think it’s all coming together.

BTW, my husband used to be an industrial sand blaster and painter but gave it up because he was tired of traveling. He was really good at it too, real good.

You should have been at our house on Sunday. We’re putting in travertine counter tops in the kitchen – ourselves. No fussing, just girding our loins kind of thing. It’s looking good so far but then there’s always the unexpected calculation/sitcheeayshun…always.

  10. if you wanna do vintage-fabulous, it must be turquoise…

  11. I have no color sense, either. It’s a bit embarrassing actually.

  12. Cool!

Hey, PA, check your palmaxis email, woman…

  13. PJ: Sounds like you and yours are do it your-selfers like me and mine.
I’m thinking of going with the sage because it’s so nuetral but then I do like the bright colors and two of my chairs are in easter egg salmon and purple. Then the glider is in sage, yellow and maroon. Add to that the two multi color mosaic tabletops. Oh , the slats that fit across the newly plasted chair are orange and goldenrod. Gads

Vetti: Thats what is so upsetting about missing out on the cushions. Turquoise would have been perfect with them. French Regional.

Margaret: But your dinning plates are gorgeous

    Laurie: ok

  14. Papaya – it’s such a nice name for a color – so fruitey.

  15. Leisure Brown

    That’s it.
