R.F.Q.’s/Procrastination/Galco’s

Maybe it’s not apparent at first glance but R.F.Q’s/Procrastination and Galco’s do have a common connection. Me.

R.F.Q. Request for Qualifications. In my world it’s called a job application. The deadline…..4:00pm Monday; across the desk, no post marks accepted. Each application is never quite the same. This one wants twelve images, that one wants four. This one wants a 4″x 6″ dpi 300 numbered format, that one wants a 12″x 14″ dpi 72 numbered one through four (to be seen on the first round) format. I might gear an application more towards design while favoring the three dimensional for another. It requires a certain degree of strategy. The commission in question thinks I should go out and visit each one of the twelve proposed sites, select one and then describe why. This is asking too much. I googled map quest (love them) took in a street view, made a selection and then came up with a superficial line of intent that should pass muster. Of course in the meantime I’m plowing away on Face Book Farmville, reading Sedaris, blogging and feeling guilty. ADD? yes, I was raised on Ritalin. I often think of going back to it. It’s an option. I just keep putting it off.

Looking for diversion, I remembered Galco’s. I wasn’t really hungry, eating is a diversion too. Down the hill and west of the bridge to Galco’s house I went. I’ll spare you the reason I quit going to Galcos out of respect for the family, but things have changed. The Blockbuster is now $4.95 as opposed to $.95 when I first visited back in 74. I’m old. So is Cheerwine. They started in 1917 and use pure cane sugar. There really is a taste difference between cane and corn. Subtle

Galco’s is a kind of soda museum now. It’s also adjacent to my other favorite; the Highland Park Police Museum. Don’t want to do what you should? may I suggest a small diversion?

  1. ………
It cost me some sleep and some extra cash at the post office, but I’ve been told it shall be across the desk by 4pm Monday

  2. Hey, hey – who are you calling old!!!?!
Deadlines suck, no matter what line of work you are in. Well done on getting it there on time.
It’s sad that both Galco’s and the Northeast Stations are museums…but at least they are still around. 10-4, over & out.

  3. Ok, I definitely wouldn’t touch the drink, but is the sandwich worth it? Can you eat in the museum?

  4. We have Jones sodas, made with the cane, pure. I’m not big on soft drinks but when I have one leave the Coke in the can. Bleccch! When I have to meet a deadline I depend on dark chocolate. It’s getting pretty expensive but then, all the good habits are.

  5. I am a big fan of sandwich

  6. We heard that Coke bottled in Mexico is still made with cane sugar so we found a little bodega in the barrio and bought some (after our normal procrastination, of course). The clerk looked at us like we were crazy for being there. The procrastination thing seems to be getting worse as I grow old. But still like Coke.

  7. D, I know most people like some kind of cola but I just never have. It tastes just awful to me but you go ahead and enjoy yours, especially when buying it in a little bodega. I hope it was in an old fashioned bottle.

  8. Good luck with the application!

Since the demise of slides, I’m just not entering things. I think I need a tutor.
Gotta go. I see some clouds.

  9. PJ, ain’t America wonderful…even though it was a low-relief copy of the old fashioned bottles. I’m addicted to soda pop, or sody as I’ve heard it called.

  10. Anyone say diversions? I spent a week making a Medusa wig. Why? Why?

  11. Tash: You can still pick up a sandwich at Galco’s. The packaging remains the same (which is kind of interesting) and of course a soda. I see that Police museum in movies and television often now. That and Suicide Bridge along with Santa Fe Ave. Those film sites make the rounds.

AH: Ok, confessional time here. I have the palate of a teenager. Did my Carver Caramels not make that clear? Then again Mr V liked his Blockbuster (won’t touch the caramels) and he is a elitist. He also liked the soda for being subtle. I missed the corn.

PJ: Just last night discovered bad weather near you. Without a proper Antenna, pixel TV is pixel breakdown for me; and the car radio isn’t working either. The storm is loosing power right?

Jones. I’ve seen it around. Great packaging and weird flavors; bubblegum…yum. I’ve got a bunch of diet Shasta blackcherry in the fridge. To repeat myself “palate of a teenager” milk chocolate for me. Loved those gold squares with the horse shoe on them.

Deepak: What is a favorite sandwich for you?

D: It must be. As a kid I remember people complaining about the flavor of coke when they visited Tijuana. I’m starting to become aware of how ubiquitous corn syrup truly is. Isn’t there a film out there on this stuff? I’m kind of afraid to watch it ever since I saw a program that looked into the DNA of hamburger meat and discovered 350 different cows made up a pound.

Shanna: I can help you with this. I know where to go and I know how to fix them once there made digital.

It could be a fun project. Not a lot of dough involved and unfortunately the bureaucratic hoops tend to be the same whether the commission is small or large.

Margaret: I bet you did so compulsively and with great passion. Now did the event match your earnestness? Notice the use of “earnestness”? I watched House of Mirth with Jillian Anderson last night. I’m a sponge.

  12. Hi again -
I linked your LAX post on MostlyLACounty.blogspot.com but no one reads that one :(

  13. Pasadena Adjacent: Okay! I’ll take you up on that. But, let me warn you. I’m really lost. Email me if you feel like it…
