Trash Tuesday #40: Where Getting it Cheap is Part of the Esthetic

people_large-1

Sometimes trash finds you when you wish it wouldn’t. In this case “trash” is a cat  named “Peoples” Harsh you say? Well, yes and no. There’s a family living down the street that we discretly refer to as “generational welfare recipients.” Same situation applies to their cats. Problem is once the kittens leave the curb, they’re on their own. Sadly, the results are predictable: (A) they get run over (B.) they turn feral lasting a few years before a coyote gets them or (C.) select a home occupied by a couple of elderly female cats and immediately start referring to them as “My Pride and Posse”. “Peoples” chose option three. Strangely, once sweet Ellenor passed in 2008 (our LA river trash cat), Peoples took to sitting on her grave. A sign you say? That, plus he wouldn’t go away.

Besides being polydactyl “Peoples” demonstrates another of his rare but charming characteristics… as long as he gets to lead and I stick to his territory, he’ll walk with me. Of course he’s less then enthusiastic when it’s a 100 degrees in the shade.

With a little sub standard medical care Peoples is now nutless and adjusting to the joys of domesticity. Yes, he peed on top of the bag. Unfortunately he hasn’t grasped the concept of kitty litter yet. These things take time.

  1. In my neighborhood, trash collection takes place on a Tuesday. The night before is a good time to canvas the neighborhood for castaways. It’s great sport. I use Tuesday on my blog to post my treasures. The phrase “getting it cheap is part of the esthetic’ was coined by my photographer friend D Gordon

  2. The first photo in the post is of Peoples before he lost his upper and lower canine fangs to the ravages of territorial disputes. The name Peoples was Mr V’s idea. He refers to him as “We the Peoples Reliant on the Republic of Us”. Peoples likes Mr V best although PA feeds him.

  3. It probably was the tuna lure. I thought it was me!
Thanks for visiting my blog. It gave me a chance to see yours. I love the entire “feel” of your pages and I’m going to want to know a lot more about Peoples.
BTW, that purple (lilac?) chair is really cool and those cushions are to die for!
Hope to see you again on one of my blogs.

  4. There is a friend of mine who works for a nonprofit aimed at spaying and neutering stray and feral cats. They do the snip-snip and then release them back where they came from. Best way to control the population.

  5. Knowing nothing about cats with the exception that they cause my eyes to itch, how many toes (fingers, digits?) does a cat normally have? In my house it’s a dog’s world, and that dog wants to get better “aquainted” with an orange striped cat roaming free in the neighborhood. Wonder if she might be part coyote.

  6. I must say, Peoples is rather beautiful, so I expect you had no choice.

Like the name. I knew a lab once named Fingers, which was very apt as labs are great thieves.

  7. I think he.s beautiful and smart.

  8. At one time we had two male cats (rescued and neutered as kittens) who took it upon themselves to adopt a stray kitten. They gave her first dibs on food and generally behaved the way any good cat owners do–they worshiped her.

  9. Peoples is one lucky kitty, and to have two hoomins managing his persona! And he proves that one cat’s litterbox is another cat’s yard. We have two kitties, Sweet William Grey and Miss Digit, who have given up roaming in their old age so they’re now allowed to come and go as they please and they’re happier and healthier for it. Still, they come in to use the litterbox. You would think with 1/2 an acre they would get the picture. The Diginator is also polydactyl – maybe even part Maine Coon as she “talks” which is very sweet – and this is the proof:

The other night I left her out past sunset when I heard some ominous sounds. I ran out and found her facing down another cat. She’s 18+ and she won. She wouldn’t come inside preferring to hide under a trailer and keep her vigil. I brought her in anyway. She’s the shit.

PS Love the garden shot, the succulents are amazing.

  10. Where’s a coyote when you need him!

  11. I think Peoples is fabulous. And although he is definitely found, he is absolutely not trash.

  12. Grave-sitting, polydactyl, found cats are definitely signs. No doubt about it.

  13. That is one happy cat.

  14. That’s one lucky kitty. Don’t you love the way they just plop down when they are done walking. Our two will follow Amy and run ahead and plop down to wait. & who needs tidy cat with all that great dirt around.
Nice to see the old neighborhood.
We’ve been to Virginia Lakes (north of Mono Lk) years ago in September. Been meaning to get back there every fall since. Sounds like you have a splendid place to stay there.

  15. Thought the name was from People’s dept store. I like Mr V’s version.

  16. thank heavens the chef is back. He sounds like an easy touch — maybe he’ll send your son some money.

  17. AP, ahem PA: it’s not you. It’s just a cat & dog thing. You woodn’t understand.

  18. If Peoples were a human he’d be extremely loyal, not very affectionate and a ex-con
