Leave conceptual art to the professionals. Do not try this at home.

  1. The drinks are on me?

Man Ray was the first dog William Wegman used in his performance art. He later acquired Fay Ray. Together Ray and Fay are the original parental stock of all subsequent weimaraners used in Wegman’s art. Phoebe Ray is not famous but wishes she were. I do her make up.

Wilacre park was once the estate of silent film star Wil Acres. It’s located off of Laurel Canyon drive south of the Ventura freeway. The doggie watering stop is on a ridge at the junction of Coldwater park. The Magic Forest trail splits off to the right. It leads to where the Tree People keep there operation. Tree people are a grass roots organization thats been spearheading efforts to plant trees throughout urban Los Angeles. You can visit their exhibits and nursery

below: pdf map of the park

  2. This is fabulous! And, I’m sure, a well-deserved tribute to Phoebe.

  3. Now Phoebe wants a massage and champagne. And a touch-up.

You and Vanda have shamed me into improving my Echo Mountain posts.

All these places, all these places that need to be visited before they’re shut down or turned into pasture, or god knows what.

Thanks for the map. I plan to go.

(I wouldn’t try that at home. Can’t afford the brand.)

  4. Wegman’s canine pieces have always been entertaining.

I know that dog park on Mulholland. And know the Tree People too. I planted some trees with them this spring in Valley Village.

I have (had?) a postcard set of conceptual art created by cats. Most were paintings – apparently some cats paint -, others were installations (Dead Mouse on Carpet), and I most vividly remember the chewed plastic window blind piece. It was transcendent.

  5. I’ve always loved the name Man Ray for this dog, particularly given his photogenic-ness (is that a word?) but this video is too painful, too close to my own behavior about 3:00 AM with an empty bottle of vodka…or so I’ve been told. I need to check youtube in case there’s a video of me. Cheers.

  6. Oh, forgot to add that I once woke up after a debauch next to someone who resembles Phoebe…without the makeup.

  7. Edit: Laurel Canyon Blvd South of the Ventura Freeway (not Mulholland drive).

Pasadena Adjacent is easily confused and not to be trusted with sharp instruments.

  8. Well, there is a dog park, on (or rather just off) Mulholland Drive, really close to the Laurel Canyon intersection.

  9. XXce!!ent! work as usual. You have artistry in your blood.

  10. I don’t remember D, and I certainly never go anywhere without my make up.

  11. I remember Wegman from SNL. My favorite was the Hollywood kiss.
I’m assuming the jar was made from sugar?? I hope…
Nice dog fountain, Fido would be very happy on a hot day. I suppose it would be nice for tootsies as well.

  12. We Fido’s are strict about our dog parks: the only good dog park is, “no felines allowed!”

I’ve seen Phoebe with de makeup off. All I can say is she doesn’t look like a dog.

  13. Cool bottle. Persistent dogs. Are they published?

  14. PS – how about the Monte Carlo ownership bit. That’s so great. I hope they are still both running and spruced up.

  15. If I knew you were coming I would have baked a cake, or at least the drinks would have been on me.

It’s funny; the locals refer to the whole area as Fryman Canyon, or Fryman Canyon Park. Your in my hood now and I never even knew it was part of a silent movie stars estate. But you’re into those things, so of course you’d know about the movie starlight.

The dog park is indeed off Mulholland Dr and it is a fun place to take our dog Spot who likes to make lots of spots. Unfortunately for CO/CP felines are allowed (sorry poochie) I guess that leaves you out.

  16. Oh, BTW, since I missed Buddha trash day you might just like to think about Buddha on wheels speeding down Laurel Canyon Blvd.

Buddha on hot wheels hot link

  17. Forgot to mention William Wegman and his dogs Spot, Spot, Spot and Spot. They Rock. And I was lucky enough to have him as a guest lecturer for one semester a long time ago in art school; I rember him as funny, smart, likable and very open to talking about new and never tried creative ideas. Wegman brings back fond memories.

  18. I knew someone who used to housesit for Wegman & take care of the dogs. Really.

  19. Clarification:

Yes… trail heads are on Mulholland Drive but Wilacre Park isn’t. Wilacre Park also charges a parking fee of five dollars per auto. Runyan Canyon Park, Fryman Canyon Overlook and Coldwater Canyon Park all have trail heads off of Mulholland Drive.

We at Pasadena Adjacent recommend Jerry Schad’s Afoot and Afield in Los Angeles County as well as Day Hiker’s Guide to Southern California by John McKinney

  20. Years ago Mr V and I attended an exhibition at La Jolla Museum of art that featured the early video work of William Wegman. Try as I might, I’ve not been able to find my favorite video from that showing. In it, Wegman shot the video through the bottom of a drinking glass (laid on it’s side). Leading to the drinking glass is a trail of milk that Man Ray joyfully laps up until he careens into the glass that bounces into the video lens. I tried doing something to that affect here at 1:34 seconds. I was amused.

Jean: Nothing is to good for our Phoebe (except according to her cheap caretaker)

AH: We in the Highlands partake of the finest vintage when it comes to sugary drinks (think soda pop king Galcos). In this case “said bottle” was a 2004 bottle of Broguiere’s egg nog. I keep the empty for pouring tap water into my Mr Coffee expresso maker. About the dog sitter (true story?)

Vanda: Find them!! My first siamese cat watched me wrap christmas presents and then put them under the tree. When I woke up the next day I discovered the entire contents of my kitchen fruit bowl under the tree (including a grapefruit). I found the tooth marks. She was my all time favorite cat.

D: It was me. You remember Baby moon Parsons?

CO: You’re barking up the wrong tree here. I’d like to see you try that tough talk with a mountain lion.

PJ: Sugar? I’d like to think so but I wouldn’t bet the farm on it. It’s the age old story, children, dogs (and gratuitous sex) steal the scene.

Tash: Wegman is the only performance artist I can think of who managed to cross into mainstream markets. Besides the Monte Carlo, Mr V also sold his truck to a fellow who also wanted to cherry it out. It was a 1962 Chevy full bed that Mr V acquired through the trade of a watercolor to Loydd Hamerol (he’s the guy who did the cut out cars in the half circle you photographed).

Mid-Town-G: The only marker to Will Acres home is a concrete pad. (you can build the go go and I’ll make the non functioning body parts)
Mr V met Wegman in the early 70’s, liked him. Remember when he went back to painting in the late 80’s? Saw a show at Solomon’s (son’s) gallery. What ever happened to him? anyhow, Wegman was a visiting artist at PCC.

  21. The Wegman video you described I think was called “Milk/Floor”.

The only other performance artist I can think of off hand that made it into pop culture was Laurie Anderson. There are probably others but at the moment I can’t think anymore and I need to run… see ya

PS Holly Solomon’s son first name is Tom, and I heard he just opened a new gallery… mid-town Wilshire (I think)
