and this is where I slept……

Before your “over the hill” you have to climb it. Mt. Pinos is the tallest peak in the Los Padres National Forest. It’s where I spent my last night of being in my 40′s. Although I may be descending the hill, the California Condors have returned to it. Doesn’t that make you happy?

  1. The Chumash saw themselves as part of the natural world rather then it’s masters. Iwihinmu, Mt Pinos, was the focal point of this balance. The Chumash call this summit Liyikshup, the center of the world.

THIS LINK leads to a plaque put up by the forest service. Indian lore etc.

THIS LINK leads to the camping sites the Mt Pinos area of Las Padres.

  2. Another Wee production from Masters at Work series; (this production has a very artistic moment).
You might recognize survey button from my previous post. This is the actual Mt Pinos peak but you won’t be alone. This may be the future income producer of our park system.

  3. Oh, these are lovely.

  4. Beautiful place to stay at any age. Those must be solar panels behind the fence.

  5. Gotta visit. How long is the hike to the top?

  6. Sure, blame it on the Vodka coolers; Condor for your birthday dinner. Shame on you!

  7. A nine foot wingspan? Did you see any soaring birds? Great to have gotten to the top of the hill to celebrate.

  8. What a great night out!
Mazal tov on your jubilee year.

  9. I like the way the Forest Service plaque reads…lands preserved in balance forever (must be excluding the unsightly tower). Just saw a preview of Ken Burns new documentary series on the National Parks, it looks spectacular. Coming to your PBS station this fall. This month my wife and I are vacationing to Rocky Mountain Nat’l Park. Hope we survive the high altitude hiking.

  10. There are a lot if bright people here. Pretend your a legislator (and you don’t give a fuck about your future electability) for a minute or two what would you do?

    Me?

First: I’d cut government fat from the politicians diet.

Second: I’d add a CA deficit relief tax to petrol (gas and diesel) at the pump to the tune of 10 cents a gallon. If you drove a car that attained milage better the 35 MPG you would get a full refund on state tax; that would do two thing IMHO, close the tax gap and encourage people to drive more fuel efficient vehicles.

Put on your thinking caps. What would you do?

Also this in: Yesterday on NP-R, KPC-C, KCR-W, or KPF-K (I don’t remember) I heard that the U-S National Forest/Parks System would RECLAIM and MAINTAIN the National parks that were given to the state of CA if the state of CA actually closes them.

I can’t decide if this is a good thing or not, and I don’t have time to research it at the moment. Anyone have an opinion on this proposed move?

(most of this posted on two of the blogs I regularly visit)

  12. duplicate, sorry, I like the second one better here

  13. PA, go visit Petrea’s blog. There are some criminals on her post.

I went back to the link we signed on the Turfinator post and it opened up to good news

“On Monday, June 15th, California’s Budget Conference Committee voted to eliminate $70 million in General Fund support for the state park system for the 2009-2010 fiscal year.  As an additional action, the committee also voted to adopt the State Park Access Pass and develop a dedicated funding source to keep California’s state parks open.  The State Park Access Pass would institute a $15 surcharge on vehicle license fees of non-commercial vehicles, in order to provide Californians with free day-use access to state parks, and generate much-needed revenues for the state park system.”

I can afford 15 bucks.  (The new link)

Margaret: It is a pretty post. Did you sit through my wee video production? I walk into the fence. Listen for the sound of my camera breaking.

Keith: So true…you are sweet. Thanks for the birthday greeting. Yes, I think they’re solar panels

AH: two miles up and two miles back from the end of the road. A rolling path. Not strenuous except for the high altitude.

Mid-Town-G: Surely you jest? I didn’t see a single condor but I did see Bakersfield

Jean: I hope you won’t be to disappointed if I told you the wing in my post isn’t a condor. I’ve been holding onto that file forever. Finally a chance to use it.

Dina: You betcha! Mazal Tov to me

D: I’ve been (and to your planned visit to Wyoming as well) I went to school with a fellow who got one of his early teaching posts at UW. I never thought I’d see the day when anyone from your neck of the “woods” would leave it.

  15. Presently the laws in California require that hunters use non lead bullets in the condor range. The law isn’t always followed as this link proves. I don’t know if this bird survived. Another bird brought in under similar circumstances did not.
