Mary and I are doing our Monday hike on a Wednesday

This is the Mount Wilson Pinko Snow Tower. This is where the Mount Wilson internet camera is placed.  According to the fellow who moves the “Tower Cam” about, it also serves as a fire lookout. Mary doesn’t like going uphill, but she will.

If your at the right angle, and it’s clear enough, you can see the itty bitty Snow Tower (encapsulated in the blue dot) from the valley below. Mary prefers the canyon floors.

The Tower Cam is usually aimed in the direction of the 100 inch Hooker telescope and beyond. I like to keep a collection of Mount Wilson screen shots. Although I dream of snow, Mary and I are not expecting any.

  1. It looks like a packman wedged himself on top of Jacob’s pink ladder.

  2. I’m not the Mary referred to here. Don’t get us confused. One is a hiker and one is a guzzler. (hiccup) ’scuuzzme

What’s that blue dot on top of the mountain? Is that where you went with the Mary that I am not?

Int snow wunnerfool? It makes me yearn feraudder whiskey on toast. Don’t breeeb a worb to MisshshH!

  3. Beautiful. I’ll be back later but wanted to see if you saw the see-worthy shot on http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ – the photo reminded me of something related to you/your work immediately

  4. I just watched a PBS program about Mt Wilson Observatory, Edwin Hubble, George Hale, and Mt Palomar Observatory detailing the manufacturing of the 100″ (c.1917) and 200″ (1930s) mirrors. Fascinating. Have you ever been inside? Can the public tour the facility? I assume they probably won’t let some schmuck like me take a peek. Why is that tower pink?

  5. Wow, you’re fast.
    here’s a tip:
use you’re and they’re (with the apostrophe) when it’s short for you are and they are (you’re going to love it)
use your and their when it indicates possession (your house)

    had fun today!

  6. Did you drag Mary up a mountain or did she keep you on the lowlands? Is Hubble a commie? Enquiring minds need to know.

  7. I drove up there about three weeks ago and the road was closed for some reason.

  8. great links today besides the really pretty photos :) been there & recall none of it. I do remember going up a fire tower in the San Bernandino Mts. also yrs ago.

  9. I’ve hiked up to Mt Wilson and down from Mt Wilson. Hiking up is easier.

  10. J.C.: Now that you mention it…

MK O’Looney: Envy is so unattractive. Did you misplace your dentures? pronouncing th’s can be troublesome without our teeth.

Tash: Mount Wilson Observatory is trying to make a comeback (in the public eye). It still in operation as a scientific entity. One of our local blogger’s whose great grandfather did all the photographic documentation of that period is part of a grassroots organization of volunteers trying to spread the history to our local schools. She volunteers her graphic services to the cause.

D: I’m waiting for Miss Havisham “Time Travels Through Pasadena at Twenty Minutes to Nine” to show up on Amazon so I can purchase the PBS DVD along with her book. I’m very thrifty when it comes to shipping costs.
And yes, I’ve been many times and you can walk the grounds (beautiful) and visit the Hooker telescope where they allow you into a small glass room to look at the telescope. They have a small museum with back lit photo transparencies of sun shots (their specialty). The architect Myron Hunt built the MW dormitories based on the monasteries he visited in Israel. The tower is pink because I photographed it at sunset.

Palm Axis spoke eloquently on the subject

Mary: wise words to write by. Now I could use help with my punctuation…such as word?. or word? New sentence, no period

Rex: Mary and I walked the skirts of Diablo Canyon concluding our walk once we reached the top of the landfill. About commies, I’d have to look at the numbers. The fellows had their head in the stars and may not of been keeping up with radical Europeans. I have no doubt that a few of those higher life forms from Caltech and JPL may have tinkered in pinko wear.

Ann: was the road closed off the highway or at the foot of the Observatory? They close the gates (from the parking lot) early or if know ones there to keep watch.

AH: I know what your saying and thats why I may never do the full hike. The last stretch up the mountain is the worst. I’ve done most of the hike in sections. It’s the best I can do.
