DOWNLOADING AND VIEWING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY IS A CRIME Your google search has been recorded Sick-O
Menduru is a six month old Malayan tiger cub at the San Diego Zoo. The zoo’s involved in conservation efforts, including breeding programs for the Malayan and Sumatran tigers. This photo was taken Tuesday by Ken Bohn. It was sent to me by my sister whose been with the zoo forever. This photo possesses what I refer to as the “BIG CUTE” factor.
While we remain cat people, monkeys hate us. Ask the quiet “Leakey Girl” Dr. Birute’ Galdikas. Nevermind, long story, but here is a brief synopsis on the Leakey girl’s ape observations.
If you give an ape a screwdriver…
1. The Gorilla will scratch his back with it
2. The Chimpanzee will try to kill you with it
3. The Orangutan will use it to try to pick the lock
Hate zoo’s, love monkeys, are deeply offended by this post? Go yell at my sister. She’s the one who keeps a Russian red squirrel coat in cold storage. Have an issue with that? go yell at Alex Trebek whose one time game show “High Rollers” is where she won “the coat of many deaths”. Much like the monkeys, Mr Trebek disliked my sister..but you better not.
……….

I do not love zoos, but don’t know enough to argue my point. I understand there’s some scientific reason for having them. And I wouldn’t dare insult your sister. Why didn’t Alex Trebek like her?
I’d had completely forgotten that you had a sister but the instant I saw your email mentioning your sister, I pictured her face and remembered that she was a zoologist in San Diego. Interesting how memory works. Hell I still can picture Ramona, your father (RIP) and brother even though I haven’t seen them in over 30 years. Perhaps it is because I first met your family when I was 12 years old?
If you give a puppy a screwdriver, he will chew the handle.
If you give a dog a screwdriver, he will follow you with it.
If you give a cat a screwdriver, you can’t give a cat a screwdriver, everyone knows cats hate screwdrivers. Great answer to Elaine about the shoed nude. Love your sis, (Hi Sis!) not crazy for zoos, plus, they smell funny (zoos, not your sister). What’s with Alex? Did she dis him? What about her did the monkeys find disagreeable? Got to know the back story. He always seems so game-show-nice on Jeopardy. Something tells me you have already given her enough grief for all of us concerning the dead squirrel pelts sewn together in the shape of a human torso, so I won’t say a thing about that. We have an abundance of squirrels in our yard including some rare black ones. Don’t let you-know-who know in case she wants a black coat too. I neglected to compliment the sound department on the earlier use of Whats New Pussycat. Is that David Sedaris singing “whoa whoa whoa whoa”?
Has she sent out a team of lawyers yet? She’s going to kill you, or perhaps this is the way of the cat people. Why does Alec Trebek hate your sister? whoa whoa whoa. Does it have anything to do with Orangutans? Why does the cat have spots on his ears?
I like some zoos.

Call me eloquent, but there are zoos, and there are zoos. San Diego does a pretty good job with the non-cage, natural environments. I was a tramdriver/tour guide at the LA Zoo, not such a great place.
Give me a screwdriver and there’s every chance I’ll poke out my eye.
Today’s zoos are about conservation and education:
The Zoological Society of San Diego’s center for Conservation and Research for Endangered Species (CRES) is the largest zoo-based multidisciplinary research team in the world. Biodiversity conservation is the theme that unites the work of CRES, and scientific innovation is the means by which CRES achieves its success.
Housed in the state-of-the-art Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center for Conservation Research at the entrance to the San Diego Zoo’s Wild Animal Park, CRES scientists generate, share, and apply scientific knowledge vital to the conservation of animals, plants, and habitats, locally and internationally. CRES encompasses five research divisions: Applied Animal Ecology, Behavioral Biology, Genetics, Wildlife Disease Laboratories, and Reproductive Physiology, as well as a dedicated Conservation Education Lab. In addition, the Beckman Center supports work done by the Giant Panda Conservation Division at the San Diego Zoo, the Native Seed Gene Bank, and the Conservation Research Postdoctoral Fellowship Program.
Over the last 30 years, the work of CRES has grown to include international field conservation programs in more than 20 countries worldwide. The CRES vision is to become the global leader in applying advances in science and technology to the conservation and recovery of endangered species. CRES identifies the most pressing problems for species conservation and then applies the most innovative and creative science possible to solving them. To achieve this goal, CRES scientists have identified six key strategic areas for focused research: Sustainable Populations, Bioresource Banking, Wildlife Health, Habitat Conservation, Restoration Biology , and Conservation Education.

Why does the cat have spots on his ears?
Theories:
1. Baby flashlight–the young focus on the spots and follow mother through the jungle.
2. Extra eyes–warns other animals not to follow to closely.
Zoos – at least these wild animals have a place they can call home. Domesticated animals often do not.
I guess people find it easier to provide a home for tigers, panthers, for example.
Wouldn’t want to see too many of these big cats roaming the neighborhood, homeless.
pssssst: coast is clear (Queen Victoria has left the office)
Hey, you should have done a caption contest! That photo is ripe for it.
Growing up in San Diego I spent a lot of time at the zoo, which is among the greatest in the world.
Queen Vicky is absolutely right about the S.D. Zoo and its conservation programs. Without them, many animal species in the wild would not have survived.
Go to http://www.sandiegozoo.org and check it out.
What a beautiful cat. I love Queen Victoria, Alex be damned!
Makes me want to grrowl wow whoa whoa
Queen Victoria spent time at Camp Leakey with the orangutans in Borneo Indonesia. Same place that actor Julia Roberts had a run in with a male ape. The story As Queen Victoria would have you hear it… Only girl monkeys (apes) hate her because of her dazzling chemically enhanced coiff. They made their feelings known by throwing poop at her. Boy monkeys (apes) on the other hand, love her, want to prove to her that they will make good providers and ultimately want to mount her (and did TRY repeatedly). Queen Victoria and I are phermonally alike, so say our cats, thus I figure the same thing would happen to me.
Alex Trebek: The story, as Queen Victoria would have you hear it, was that the audience of boy scouts were so charmed by her, that during commercial breaks, they would shout her name. This competition for the spotlight was not to Mr Trebek’s liking. (the real story) After winning the “coat of many deaths” she knocked over Trebek who stood between her and the unfortunate TV model who was wearing “her” (but not for long)coat
My two cents: The California Condor who on the brink of extinction back in the 1970’s (the count was around 40) is back because of the combined efforts between the Los Angeles Zoo and the San Diego Zoo (and others). They still face hazards in California but are thriving in Southern Utah. If you look down at the bottom of this link I’m providing, you will find many logos of participating animal and nature oriented organizations that are involved. Thats how it is now, interconnected.
Oh, and those heritage tomatoes….thank a seed bank

Petrea: You would be the last person I’d expect to insult my sister. Tonight..hope too!
Marcial: (Marcial got his horse the day after I got mine: that was my favorite summer) 30 years, ye gads? Queen Victoria isn’t a zoologist but she is a big shot with a fancy title.
D.: In truth, there just isn’t a lot of uses for a full length fur in San Diego. Once a year (winter), she brings it home for a visit. Next, she turns it inside out, gets naked and wraps herself in it. She spends the day in this manner watching her collection of musicals. When she’s done, she returns the coat to storage.
John E: Hasn’t killed me yet and it looks like the queen has answered your question.
AH: I’ve enjoyed the variations on the screwdriver analogy. The San Diego Zoo is the gold standard when it comes to zoos..not all zoos are created equal. Tram driver? we got to talk. They keep the baby condors off a trail I frequent.
CO: yes and no
Anne Erdman: Her zoo link is hot… dam wordpress for not making the hot links obvious! Same thing with Mademoiselle’s QUEEN VICTORIA and GRROWL which I’ve made hot
San Diegians love their zoo and their wild animal park
MG: I suspect she’ll be back to read your comment. Alex be damned!
D. how did you know that I did that with the coat? Did I tell you? Loved all the comments. They made me chuckle!
Queen Victoria: I thought that must be you. Fun hearing from you, but that was your sister telling all. Ha, as your mom would write (love it when she and her sisters write that). What woman wouldn’t want to be nude inside a reversed full length fur! You sound so professional when you put your zoological hat on. I’m keeping an eye on the squirrels here.
Nice kitty. Beautiful animal.
I ran across more with a pumpkin: http://throughoureyesphototblog.blogspot.com/2008/10/where-wild-things-are-gulo.html
Public Service Announcement:
NEVER use the word P-USS-ee in a post header. The spam generated will make you sick.
This was a great way to start my day. It gave me some good chuckles. Your sister and you are both great writers.
Hooray for the orangutan love fest
cheers
