Catalina Island Stables: The End of an Era, (my kind of era)

One more urban rental stable closes due to the smell of horse poop. So say the developers sitting on the sideline with bulldozers at the “ready”

I have a special affection for a horse photo poorly done. It’s a cinch to pull off! they move, their ears go in different directions, they have long faces that can complicate the depth of field focus. This photo fits my “poorly done” exacting standards. I’m going to miss these guys as well as those great acorn finials.

  1. Call it my weird but I like the smell of horse pookies and any candid imperfect non-staged photos of horses.

  2. I grew up near horses and cows, so you can take this however you want to: the smell of livestock poop reminds me of home.

  3. Maybe you can go back to Catalina and make a mold from the finial before the developers take over.
I’m so sorry to hear about everything you’re going through with Tovah. Medicating cats is the WORST.

  4. I love the smell of a well-kept stable. The slightly sour scent of horse sweat, the sweetness of the hay, and the savory smell of a bit of horse shit (my dogs really like the last one). I want a finial cast as well.

  5. Why the long face, I wonder?

  6. MG: me too!
    Petrea: home smells good
Mary: good news-Today Tovah woke up non-wobly and in a little better spirits.. bad news- the lizard died…Good news-I’ve got a tile of a lizard ready to be fired.
Ah: does your dogs like the horse hoof clippings as well? The butter worked as did the needle. I doubled up on the water dose. I’m grayer then ever.
Elaine: because they may be headed to Texas
Ah & Mary: I want to go back to Catalina in February.

  7. “I’ve got a tile of a lizard ready to be fired.”

    Oh! Ouch!

  8. I’m totally depressed about those finials. I can’t imagine this stable not being there.

I can’t say horse poop reminds me of anything. Sigh.

Scratch little Tovah’s ears for me.

  9. The horse deserves to have a long face, it’s sad the stables are closing. In my youth I could still rent a horse for an hour in Chicago (for $2.50!).
I love your blog. And also your comment about the Willits “Advent” pumpkins. :)

  10. Hello Dina welcome
I remember the $2.50 price of admission. I used to beg borrow steal and sometimes work to come up with ride money. Although cats rock my universe, horses come in a close second.
