The Kiln Gods Did Me Wrong

Why Me? (whimper)

I left an offering at the alter, I ride with Mary…. why? (whimper again)

Yes, I’m disappointed and not above “crying out loud”.  This phenomena is called crawling.  It’s when the glaze pulls away from the surface.  I’ve appropriately circled my heartbreak in pink.

  1. The circled areas are unglazed then? What causes it? Can you fill it in w/the low fire glaze and then low fire it, or would that ruin everything? The snake looks great.

  2. Sorry folks shop talk
Porcelaine 150 may be the answer to my “heart breaks”. Winiker yellow came out as cream which I kind of like but on the next snake I’m going to outline the edge with an oxide to darken it.

  3. Call me a tile idiot but I think it’s freakin’ AWESOME even with the little patches that didn’t turn out right. Don’t certain Native American tribes purposefully weave a mistake into each blanket? Or is that a myth worthy of a Snopes.com-debunking?

Anyway, it’s beautiful, PA, and I’m so sorry it got messed up. The snake is just gorgeous.

  4. Auch! I’m so sorry! But I am with Laurie – this tile is totally awesome, & beutiful. There really should be touch-up glaze as there is touch-up paint. Does Altadenahiker’s idea work?

  5. By the way – I LOVE what you do – you make me laugh, you make me think

    it is all good!

  6. Bummer! Are the external scorch marks on Frack a sign of trouble?
Sorry about the crawling on that beautiful snake. I remember from school that that happened when too much glaze was used.

  7. I’m sorry. I won’t do it again. This is about me, isn’t it?

  8. Laurie, I never call anyone an idiot who thinks my tile is freakin AWESOME, never have, never will
Thank you Tash, I don’t know about AH’s idea (I’m waiting for her to try it first). I’m going to try the porcelaine 150 product.
thanks Pam, I concur, it is all good
S.G. thank you, I’m going to run that by a pro tomorrow. I want to avoid it in the future if at all possible.
Elaine: It’s always been about you.

  9. I think the idea that we can never make something perfect is what adds the human element to all we do, as is the fact we keep on trying. Pardon my cliche, but it’s true: we are usually our own worst critic. The serpent is lovely. Don’t know nothin bout no kiln but hope you have a fire extinguisher and electric kill switch nearby.

  10. This is the way of the glazing trail. We never really know what’s going to happen. There is one brilliant mistake after another.

  11. May I introduce d wood. He’s my cousin from Peoria. Thanks D. It’s gas operated. I wonder about the cheesy fan atop one of the kilns. I don’t know, fan the flames? I think if anything were to happen, we’d just all run for the exits.

I do have some advise on the crawling from a pro. Leslie thinks the crawl might have been caused by 1. dust
    2. fingerprint 3. glaze not properly mixed 4. glaze too thin 5. glaze too thick (see what I’m up against?)

Leslie agrees with AH. I might be able to fill in using low fired glaze at cone 05-06. The glaze will go red hot but not change property. I think they even have low fire glazes that mimic the look of high fire.

  12. I feel humbled. Even your “rejects” are amazing.

  13. It is amazing. And at least you got the phrase “heartbreak in pink” out of it.

  14. S: go ahead, stroke my ego. I won’t complain, puuur puuur

Thank you Petrea, and yes I did….”Heartbreak in Pink” I make it a point to stay left of center.
